Choosing a Cremation Urn to Create a Memorial with Meaning

January 28, 2014 urngarden.com

As we race to the finish line of January, it’s been a cold cruel month.  On top of harsh weather, we’re collecting the stories that our customers share. How they deal with not only the chilling temperatures but try to find the light during a dark day. Sometimes the tales are tragic, others are inspirational and filled with hope.

We’ll start with the lady who commissioned a bronze eagle urn for her son. She chose the Spirit of America Bronze Eagle Urn for three reasons:  she wanted the best,  she wanted an urn that was made in the USA, but the biggest reason she chose this urn was because he always told his mother that she was the wind beneath his wings.

The young bride, mid 20’s, who married her love in October of 2013. Newlyweds. Still on their honeymoon. In late January, just three months after the wedding she was planning a funeral and buying a cremation urn for her late husband. He ended his young life. It’s so confusing. The family is devastated. How do we understand this?

And finally, the Asian family in New York who wanted a green marble urn to not only honor their loved one, but also celebrate the Chinese New Year. They were very specific and wanted genuine marble, not cultured or synthetic, preferably quarried in Asia. It had to be green to symbolize new life and good fortune. We discussed the properties of marble and the natural veining that occurs, she understood but preferred to have an urn with white veining and no black if at all possible as they associated the color black with darkness and illegal behaviors.Marble Cremation UrnSo far, it’s shaping up to be an interesting year and as always, we rely on our clients to guide us in creating memorials that matter.

Hummingbird Urns for Ashes

April 12, 2013 urngarden.com

Next week the hummingbird scouts will arrive in our area, and I’ll put out a feeder to attract them to my garden. They nest in the giant elm on the lawn and later in the summer it’s fun to watch them drop down from the tree and get a drink. My grandmother always hung lots of feeders when she lived in the country and my folks hang a few. It’s fun to sit out on the deck and have hummingbirds whizzing by your head. Hummingbirds in my neighborhood aren’t as visible until late in the summer when they start the feeding frenzy to bulk up for the long journey south.

Using the hummingbird as inspiration for the season of renewal we’ve rolled out three new urn styles that honor the energy and spirit of this tiny flighty bird.

Hummingbird Urn for Ashes

Hummingbird Flight urn is solid metal with a deep emerald green mirror finish and inlaid with shimmering mother of pearl. The bird and flower glow against the dark background. This style is both sturdy and delicate and would work for either an adult man or woman.

Smaller in scale, the jeweled hummingbird is a wee metal sculpture that holds a pinch of ashes or lock of hair. Hand painted in bright colors and studded with sparkling crystals, the top of the hummingbird opens to reveal a storage chamber and seals with a magnetic closure.

If a lighter color palette is more in line with your taste, we also have jewelry styled in the image or the hummingbird in both stamped sterling silver and stainless steel to create a small personal tribute. Depending on your taste and style you can create a meaningful memorial that can be worn or displayed in the home.

Instagram users can design a personalized memorial gift with the help of a brother and sister team in our nation’s capitol. Doug and Rachel Pfeffer. Their site Stitchtagram lets you login with you or your beloved’s Instagram account and keeps the memories alive on a linen or cotton canvas in the form of pillows, purses, and tote bags.

Looks like the tote bag holds at least 16 images, providing the back is a solid fabric and is about 13 inches square. $78.00

I love the coin purse clutch, it’s a good size for your cell phone and a few coins. $82.00

According to their website, Doug works on the internet and Rachel is a jeweler. When Rachel’s not designing/packing/shipping/carting around pillows and fabric, she’s soldering in her DC apartment. I’m guessing she’s about to get busy with some stitching, because not only is this a great tribute idea, it would be a fun Valentine gift. Everything is hand made right here in America. Plan on 2-3 weeks to get your design. Sorry, no rush orders.
