Summer is winding down. The hummingbirds are fueling up for the journey south and the monarch butterflies are busy too. As the days get shorter, the leaves are in the early stages of turning color. All these changes tend to make me wistful. So sad to see the summer go. So many of our clients have had busy summers, dealing with family drama, illness, moves and the changing seasons of life.

Over the years, we’ve been working with artists to capture those moments that remind us that the spirit lives in the power of nature. It’s no secret that we’re crazy for Raku pottery and the urns and burial jars that a local husband and wife team create here in the Ozarks are also popular choices for the families we serve. They specialize in natural themes that resonate with our clients using dragonflies, feathers, and ferns that are hand carved into the clay and then fired to create amazing works of art.

Dragonflies are considered elements of wind and water and as a spirit animal, it signifies change. We’ve also adapted this tiny creature as a design element in cremation jewelry to represent peace, strength, and harmony.

Birds of a Feather Cremation Urns

We’ve been inspired by the signs of spring. The twittering of our feathered friends led to the creation of our Song Bird Urn Collection. Styles range from sturdy metal urns to blown glass beauties like the Secret Garden Urn for Ashes.

Another hand painted beauty is the Cardinal Cremation Urn that features a vibrant scarlet bird perched on a branch of blooming dogwood flowers.

So pretty and suitable for male or female, we can also laser engrave names and dates if the family desires. This one has the look of ceramic, but is actually sturdy metal in the traditional vase shape.

We’re celebrating the return of the hummingbirds with a new style of Hummingbird urn.

This one is metal also with layers of rich emerald green enamel and sparkling mother of pearl inlay to create the hummingbird and flowers. The contrast of the iridescent mother of pearl against the dark green background is so beautiful.

Hummingbird Urns for Ashes

Next week the hummingbird scouts will arrive in our area, and I’ll put out a feeder to attract them to my garden. They nest in the giant elm on the lawn and later in the summer it’s fun to watch them drop down from the tree and get a drink. My grandmother always hung lots of feeders when she lived in the country and my folks hang a few. It’s fun to sit out on the deck and have hummingbirds whizzing by your head. Hummingbirds in my neighborhood aren’t as visible until late in the summer when they start the feeding frenzy to bulk up for the long journey south.

Using the hummingbird as inspiration for the season of renewal we’ve rolled out three new urn styles that honor the energy and spirit of this tiny flighty bird.

Hummingbird Flight urn is solid metal with a deep emerald green mirror finish and inlaid with shimmering mother of pearl. The bird and flower glow against the dark background. This style is both sturdy and delicate and would work for either an adult man or woman.

Smaller in scale, the jeweled hummingbird is a wee metal sculpture that holds a pinch of ashes or lock of hair. Hand painted in bright colors and studded with sparkling crystals, the top of the hummingbird opens to reveal a storage chamber and seals with a magnetic closure.

Simple Pleasures in the Garden

Earlier this Spring, I threw some seed down and these beauties sprang from the soil. Wish I knew what they’re called. Last fall, my neighbor let me harvest the seed, she said they were an old plant and didn’t know what they were.

Not only are they beautiful, they are hardy, the soil isn’t that great, and I haven’t done a thing to them. Added bonus: the hummingbirds love them.
