Honoring Thomas and Section 60

May 21, 2007 urngarden.com

Our hearts go out to the mother in Southern California who lost her son last month in a motorcycle accident. He died doing what he loved.

Remember Thomas, her only son. Here’s his My Space page courtesy of his mom.

Then we read about Section 60 at Arlington in the Washington Post. Login may be needed.

In Section 60, death remains too fresh to be separated from life.

You see it in the 17 cigars pushed into the grass near one headstone, signs that a combat unit stopped by. Here in Section 60 are the graves of 336 men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan — almost one in 10 of the dead. Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom have produced the highest percentage of burials at Arlington National Cemetery from any war. For the duration of this war, there have been few photographs of coffins returning home.

In May 2005, Beth Belle’s son, Nicholas Kirven, was the first to be buried in a brand-new row of graves. Two years later, five rows extend from his headstone.

Section 60 is the one place to get a sense of the immensity of the nation’s loss.

Today’s tip: If you’ve never been to Arlington National Cemetery– GO!

Bring Us Your Blood

May 7, 2007 urngarden.com

From the Dallas Morning News:

Here’s a new twist: a blood drive at a funeral home.

Some people are squeamish about giving blood anyway. Will they be any less squeamish about donating blood at a funeral home?

Colleague Kathy Goolsby passes on an announcement that Homestead Funeral Home in Grand Prairie is hosting a blood drive May 19 with Carter BloodCare.

Donors will receive a T-shirt and a chance to win a free night at the Gaylord resort in Grapevine or a weeklong cruise to Jamaica and Cozemel.

We have memories of a stay at the Gaylord in Grapevine. Dry county. Convention. Held hostage at the hotel. Stinky water. Jamaica or Cozemel sounds more enticing.

It’s all for a good cause, but my suspicious mind wonders…..does the funeral home get access to the names of the donors? Can donors expect solicitations for pre-need planning?

Mail Call

April 27, 2007 urngarden.com

Three Beautiful Things:

  1. Hummingbird scouts
  2. Lush green grass
  3. Finally making a decision

First we go to the mailbox:

“I saw a KISS (the rock group) urn in a movie today. Do you have any idea where I could find one of these or where I could have one made? “

Evidently, the movie Elizabethtown, starring Orlando Bloom & Kirsten Dunst, has a bizarre KISS reference. At one point, a KISS Forever cremation urn makes a brief appearance in the 2 hour film. This might give Gene Simmons an idea for some new KISS merchandise after the infamous KISS Casket..?

We checked out scenes of Elizabethtown, and lost interest immediately. Bloom and Dunst on their cellphones…in the rain….how romantic. No thanks.

Regarding the urn, so sorry.

Speaking of mail, previously the earliest our mail arrived was around 2 PM. Since the route is on wheels, mail is arriving at 11 AM. This should thrill the Wilhelm’s.

Today’s tip for better living: Do some push-ups.

Family Jewels

April 19, 2007 urngarden.com

Greetings!

While doing research for an article on cremation urn jewelry, we felt the need to share early examples of the art form. So we are having an exhibit in the garden this week.

Early memento mori featured skulls and crossbones and we’ll display those later this week. Serpents symbolize eternal life and are often featured in the Victorian designs. Today’s examples will feature brooches and pendents made from jet and ebony originating from the Civil War period.

memento mori

Soldiers going off to war would often leave a lock of hair with the family, in the event he didn’t make it home. Memorial jewelry peaked in popularity during the Victorian era.

Today’s tip for better living: Absorb.

As Seen on TV

April 16, 2007 urngarden.com

Greetings!

Three beautiful things:

Sunshine
Realizing you’re not as crazy as you thought
Inspiration

Lileks had a good Monday post, (see #2 TBT) mundane subjects like an adventure to the outdoor living store and highway driving. I quote:

“On the way out I saw a Summer Grilling section, with America-flag themed merchandise, and I had instant summer’s end panic. It’s the Fourth soon! Which means it’ll be over! And then it’s fall! And then it’s Winter! Repeat at an ever-hastening pace until dead!”

And I realized……I do that. Get on a loop and start to get a little anxious….about the clock. Settle down.

Urn Media Watch: Spotted on Soprano’s Sunday Night.

At Phil Leotardo’s social club, Phil hosts a celebration of what would have been his brother Billy’s 47th birthday. He places the urn holding Billy’s ashes back up above the bar – so he’ll be able to see his friends when they visit. Working himself up over the story of how his family’s name was changed from Leonardo to Leotardo (“a ballet costume”), Phil tells Butchie he’s had enough. He shouldn’t have stayed quiet in jail and he should have avenged Billy’s murder. “No more Butchie. No more of this,” he vows.

We carry this style, maybe we’ll rename: “The Leotardo”.

No.

Have a great week, might be a good night for baseball!
