Military Veterans Choose Cremation in Record Numbers

February 23, 2011 urngarden.com

As national cemeteries across the country are expanding at a rate not seen since the Civil War, more space is being devoted to niches and plots for urns. Veterans are opting for cremation in record numbers, doubling the cremation rate of civilians.

Many U.S. national cemeteries less than 10 years old are getting  multi-million dollar  upgrades to add burial spaces for cremated remains and above-ground niches for cremation urns.

Personal cemetery plots are wonderful,” said retired Marine, Jim Long. The retired Marine likes the option of being buried in a national cemetery with his comrades in arms. “I’m not a religious man, but the Lord does want us to stay together. We must have one hell of an army in heaven.”

The Bird’s Cry is a Beautiful Song

Phoenix Reborn by Iron-Phoenix

A Phoenix is a mythical bird that is a fire spirit with a colorful plumage and a tail of gold and scarlet (or purple, blue, and green according to some legends). It has a 500 to 1,000 year life-cycle, near the end of which it builds itself a nest of twigs that then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix or phoenix egg arises, reborn anew to live again.

Inspired by the image of the Phoenix, the Urn Garden artists have created a keepsake urn in the style of body art.

Peggy Smith Memorial Tattoo

Peggy Edge Smith Memorial Tattoo

Peggy Sue Smith, RIP: My nephew had a memorial tattoo done to honor his grandmother, who introduced him to the guitar and paid for lessons.

Peggy was my mother-in-law, and was an influence in launching this site. Peggy had always been the picture of health and when she died suddenly from a brain tumor, 6 weeks after diagnosis, we were all deeply affected. Peggy’s husband Ed Smith was kind enough to compose these words about Peggy:

It’s hard to put a lifetime in such a short space but Peggy Smith had a full life even though it was prematurely shortened by a malignant brain tumor in 2001 at the young age of sixty. Peggy grew up and attended schools in Springfield, MO graduating from Central High School in 1959. She had been a student worker in high school and was hired as a full-time secretary at Parkview High School upon graduation. She worked there for several years before moving to California and then returning to Springfield in the mid-seventies. She was re-hired by the Springfield School District upon return and worked there until retiring in 1998 for a total of 31 years with the School District. Peggy’s first marriage was ended in the late eighties and she was married again in 1984. She was the mother of two children, Kirk Hall and Keely (Hall) Millstead, and the grandmother of eight, five of whom were brought into her life in the second marriage. She thoroughly enjoyed their participation in sports, music and other activities and didn’t miss many opportunities to see all of them perform at their various functions. She was a great lady and has been missed much by all who knew her in the more than four years since her death.

Ashes in the Ink

July 6, 2009 urngarden.com

Back in the day, cutting edge technology allowed our families to pose with the dear departed and record the moment for posterity.

memento mori

That idea faded and seems creepy now, but what about the background noise I heard this weekend? Snippets of  reality tv with the Jackson Family Show trying to coordinate a very public gold- plated memorial service.

Or the bit of a tattoo road show, featuring a gentleman who mixed a trace of his loved one’s ashes into the ink and had a portrait style memorial tattoo on his chest.

At the quieter end of the spectrum, one of our clients does design work in a memorial garden at a hospital in upstate New York, had this good word to say about our personalized river rock garden stone.

“Both the stone itself and the workmanship — is lovely and has become the new standard in our Memorial Gardens.”

tattoo

This tatt caught my eye yesterday. Always full of questions, I asked the owner “Is that the tree of life? Are the words Hawaiian?”

Lakota was the language. The imagery represented Mother Earth, and Father Sky. The translation is:

Makpiyah Ate: Father Sky

Yuoniha: Honor

Ina Maka Yukka: Mother Earth Awaken

Wowicakl: Truth

The other arm translates to:
