Military Veterans Choose Cremation in Record Numbers

February 23, 2011 urngarden.com

As national cemeteries across the country are expanding at a rate not seen since the Civil War, more space is being devoted to niches and plots for urns. Veterans are opting for cremation in record numbers, doubling the cremation rate of civilians.

Many U.S. national cemeteries less than 10 years old are getting  multi-million dollar  upgrades to add burial spaces for cremated remains and above-ground niches for cremation urns.

Personal cemetery plots are wonderful,” said retired Marine, Jim Long. The retired Marine likes the option of being buried in a national cemetery with his comrades in arms. “I’m not a religious man, but the Lord does want us to stay together. We must have one hell of an army in heaven.”

Full Bird

Most of the time, the calls we field are families in distress, and occasionally, like any business, you get the odd bird. The Colonial, for instance.

This gentleman insisted that I address him by his “first” name “The Colonial”, and he had questions.

I had answers.

Next, we moved to his favorite topic. HIZ SELF and his many great accomplishments in military service. Wow! If it was true, I might like to know more, so I asked for his full name. “Why? you gonna look me up?” He asked. “Sure.” I said, “Have you ever Googled yourself?”

“Uh, no.” he answered.

“Well. You must be CLASSIFIED,” I said, “there’s nothing here.” He responded that indeed, all of his work was TOP SECRET.

Agreed. Because, what I didn’t mention? The only information that came up under his name was sex offender info.

Companion Urn for the Veteran’s Cemetery

January 17, 2008 urngarden.com

Hal from Cocoa Beach called today (70 degrees and raining) looking for a wood double capacity cremation urn for a military niche at the naval academy.

A tricky task indeed if you’ve never shopped for a companion urn. Academy regs state that no more than three urns to a niche. The dimensions he is working with are 10.25″ H x 8.5″ W x 10.25″ deep. Based on a standard adult urn size, the niche sounds like a single unit to me.

A basic  wood double urn was the answer for  for a standard size niche at the veterans cemetery.
