Urns for Mothers, Beauty from the Ashes

May 3, 2019 Kim Stacey

In honor of Mother’s Day, we’re going to look at cremation urns for mothers. And, in the process, I’d like to skirt gracefully around the edges of that oh-so-complex relationship we have with our mothers. It doesn’t seem to matter who you are – and what type of mother you had – the connection we have to ‘mom’ is a life-long one. We’ve written before about some of the memorial urn styles that families have selected for mom and you can read about that too.

Types of Mothers
Psychologists argue there are different types of mothers. Some say there are five types: the perfectionist; the unpredictable mom, the mother who strives to be a child’s best friend; the self-centered “me-first” mom, and that ideal of motherhood, the “complete” mother. Others claim there are ten or fifteen different types of mothers. No matter the number – or the names given to them – there’s no denying our mothers pay a very part in preparing us for adulthood.

A Bit about Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world, albeit on different days of the year. In Afghanistan, as in other areas in the Middle East, it’s celebrated in March; in Luxemburg, the importance of motherhood is acknowledged in June. (Source: ChartsBin.com) Here in the United States (and dozens of other nations) it always falls on the second Sunday in May – this year; the date is May 12th and whether you celebrate the day or not–its arrival is sure to stir up memories and emotions.

Usually, families gather together to acknowledge and celebrate the mother who spent years raising us. We toast to her health and happiness, kiss her on the cheek, and we may even have arrived with a small gift. Or maybe we send flowers. But, when Mom is gone – as mine has been for the past 30 years – Mother’s Day isn’t the same. We struggle to find meaningful ways to do those things we always did: show mom how much we love and appreciate her presence in our lives. This Mother’s Day, it may be appropriate – and personally healing – to select the perfect cremation urn for mother. Let’s take a closer look.

Consider the charming Mom Urn Necklace. Made of durable stainless steel, it measures 1-1/4? L x 3/4? W x 1/4?; comes with a 22? chain and microfiber jewelry pouch.

The next two cremation urns for mothers include the image of a cardinal. If you’re not already aware, the cardinal is deeply symbolic. Many believe cardinals are messengers from someone who has died. Certainly, the male’s brilliant cardinal red color, and (to Christians) is symbolic of the blood of Christ, And red is symbolic of steadfast faith and love.

Cardinal on Dogwood Flower Urn

This full-size adult cardinal cremation urn is classically styled, and features the image of a cardinal sitting on the branch of a dogwood tree. Like the cardinal, the dogwood is also a symbol for Christians: “It is said that the wood of the dogwood tree is the hardest and that it was chosen to be used in the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.”(Source:hunker.com.) It’s a very popular urn and the reviews we’ve received are heartwarming.

Just last month, Kayla wrote “The loss of my grandma was very sudden and we were not prepared for all of the decisions you have to make when someone leaves us. Urn Garden made one of the hardest decisions into one of the easiest. The urn is absolutely stunning. The engraving looks phenomenal and the quality is top notch for an incredibly affordable price. Thank you so much. She would have absolutely loved it.”

These same customers appreciate the Jeweled Cardinal Keepsake Urn. Beautifully detailed, this diminutive keepsake urn (it’s just 3” high) is a gorgeous tribute to mother.

If the symbolism of the Cardinal isn’t a ‘good fit” with the memories you hold of “Mom”, consider the Hummingbird Mini-Urn for Ashes. It’s a bit larger than the previous keepsake urn, measuring 5″ x 3-1/2″.

If your mom loved the ocean, then Siesta Key Beach Urn is the perfect full-sized cremation urn to honor her memory. It stands almost 11” high, and the colors are deep and rich. Like the earlier full-sized urn, this cremation urn can be engraved, personalizing your memorial.

Honor Your Relationship with Mother

My mother died 30 years ago. I have only 3 pictures of her, and my memories of her are very mixed. So, next time, I’d l like to explore the ways we can honor our deceased mothers on Mother’s Day while, at the same time, dealing with the emotions – love, grief, anger, loneliness – raised each year by holidays such as this.

As I said earlier, my mother died almost 30 years ago. Still, every Mother’s Day, I think of her – and take time to make a list of all the wonderful attributes she instilled in me. Why dwell on the negatives? If she were still alive, I’d like share this (albeit short) list with her:

1. You taught me to love the history and power of words.
2. You showed me how the act of writing can heal emotional wounds.
3. You shared your love of gardening with me – a gift I still enjoy.
4. Through contrasting behavior, you showed me how to be a compassionate, caring, attentive mother.

This Mother’s Day, why not write your own “gratitude” list? If your mother is still alive, share it with her. If, as in my case, she’s no longer alive; simply speak the words aloud. In doing so, you acknowledge her gifts to you; and energize your on-going relationship with (the memories of) your mother.

Urns for the Beach Life

beach trail

What do we do for fun around here? As we ease into Fall, lately we’re dreaming about sand and surf, although with the recent hurricanes, the beaches are wrecked. So there are cheap flights and if you can get away go for it! It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful depending on where you stay….

Yesterday, we talked to a mother and I did not get the complete story, but the family was not expecting to get ashes back from their 23 year old daughter who had died. But things change and now they were going to receive a small amount her ashes. The funeral director said it would be about a cup or so. The deceased was a young mother with two small children. Mother said she loved to knee board and play in the water. She knew as soon as she saw the blown glass wave it was perfect for her daughter.

Earlier this summer, a gentleman called to inquire about the big shell urn we sell. He needed a biodegradable urn for a water burial that was planned. And? He had to pass airport security to make it happen. He wanted everything to fit on board the plane, and he was concerned about whether the shell would fit in the overhead compartment. The shell is super lightweight, but packaged in an oversize box.

So, he ordered and after the delivery, he boldly went bag shopping with empty urn in tow to find a tote that would accommodate the box that he could check as a carry on.

Success! Now, I don’t know the details on where he shopped, but he did call back to say that the flight was smooth and the ash scattering ceremony was successful.

We’ve spoke to clients who were able to live their dream and move to the beach. Some of them were short and sweet stays, but life changing and inspirational. This particular couple inspired the Santa Rosa Beach Cremation Urn.

Other clients have told us about some of their favorite beach vacations and we were so inspired to create a couple ocean styles based on their descriptions.

This one is inspired by one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Siesta Key. It also comes in a purple version. Adult sizes and smaller keepsakes to match are available.

My mom and dad love Maui and we named this memorial urn after their love of white sand and palm trees. It’s been popular with our customers as well. We are one of the few retailers that are able to engrave this urn.

But when the storms roll in, the survivors clean up and move on. The bronze lighthouse and sea shell jewelry were bought by clients who had weathered hurricane Sandy. So we look for the rainbow after the storm.

Beach Cremation Urns in the Dead of Winter

January 16, 2015 urngarden.com

beach cremation urnsSo, for weeks now it’s been cold, dark, and bitter and thoughts are turning to sunshine. Really would like to feel some warmth! Our customers are longing for it too and are picking styles that match the winter dream of a sunny beach, sound of the waves, and a beautiful ocean sunset.

Based on that, we’ve launched a collection of beautiful beach themed cremation urns to honor the salt life. Santa Rosa Beach urn is one addition to this group. It’s a full-size adult urn made from metal, but painted in beautiful watery shades of blue. Very calming with the sea oats blowing in the warm breeze, we were inspired by the Florida coast. This one looks great with engraving.

A recently widowed client selected the Santa Rosa Beach cremation urn. Her and her husband had retired eight weeks earlier to a seaside community and were living their dream of an ocean front condo, sunshine and palm trees. They barely got settled when he had a massive heart attack and died at home.shell cremation urn for ashesAnother family picked the bronze sea shell urn for their mother, who recently passed away. The mother had made it clear that she wanted an ocean themed urn and at first was looking at a blown glass wave but found that it was too small to contain all of the ashes.

Even though there are less expensive dolphin and tropical beach designs, they really didn’t want the traditional vase and preferred an art piece or sculpture. The conch shell was perfect for them, and they liked the idea that not only was it made in America, but also loved the legend associated with mermaids protecting themselves with a conch shell.

If you’d rather create a small memorial rather than buy a full size urn, cremation jewelry might be the answer and there are a few styles in the beach theme with shells, sand dollars, and of course, dolphins.

The dolphin urn has been a popular style for families that love the playful spirit of the dolphin. It’s also made from sturdy bronze metal and looks very elegant and discreet. No one would ever guess it’s a cremation urn. Made in America by skilled bronze artist, this is considered custom art and usually has a lead time, call or email for details.

If metal is not for you, there are more organic options, like the Beachcomber cremation urn that is made from sand and is completely biodegradable. This would be a good choice to buy for those that are interested in reducing the footprint here on earth and want a clean green burial, whether it’s on land or sea.

There are even urns made from paper and salt that are ideal for a memorial service that would involve scattering ashes at sea or on the lake. Organic, clean and biodegradable, this style of urn will float for a few minutes before sinking to the bottom and won’t hurt the wildlife or environment.

On the flip side of organic urn options, there are a few low cost boxes with beachy graphics. These are inexpensive boxes made from MDF wood with custom graphics. This style would be ideal for burial or placement in a niche.

In the meantime, one of our associates is on business in Destin, he’s a photographer, and while we are here freezing our tails off, he’s beach side and has dispatched some photos while on location.

He wasn’t bragging, because frankly, it’s overcast and cool there. But he has the beach to himself and the salt air, and meals of fresh shrimp, and oysters have been good to lift his spirits.

Another friend shared a graphic announcing that it’s “I Hate Florida Week” with a heat map showing most of the country in a deep Arctic freeze, while the state of Florida was the only one warm with red. We are feeling the chill here, as we shiver under the layers, trying to keep warm.
