A “Jackass” Perishes

June 20, 2011 urngarden.com

While it is often a more “respected” individual featured on this blog, this death is tragic and relevant to those of a younger generation who enjoyed many laughs at the “Jackasses” expense. In discussing this with a few of my peers this morning we came to the conclusion that what is more impressive is the fact that none of the Jackass crew has died before this. Below is more on the story from CNN. Side note: I’ve read approximately 5 news stories about Ryan Dunn’s death this morning and the CNN story is the only one not mentioning Ryan’s claim to fame being the fact that he once forced a toy car up his rectum. How do you want to be remembered?

Ryan Dunn, one of the stars of MTV’s “Jackass” films and TV series, was killed in a fiery car crash on a Pennsylvania highway early Monday, police said.

A passenger in Dunn’s 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 was also killed, but investigators have not positively identified the body, according to the police report sent to CNN.

The red-bearded Dunn, 34, was famous for his pranks and dangerous stunts on the show, which evolved into a successful film franchise.

West Goshen, Pennsylvania, police were called to the wreck scene on State Route 322 at 2:30 a.m., the police report said.

“Upon arrival, police located one vehicle off the road and in the woods that was fully engulfed in flames,” the report said.

“Speed may have been a contributing factor to the accident,” police said, although the investigation is in its preliminary stages. Dunn was driving the Porsche, which was registered in his name, police said.

Obituaries- Light and Dark

November 9, 2009 urngarden.com

Many of the obituaries that appear in our local paper are brief, and often testimonies to the deceased’s acceptance of Jesus as their personal savior. Here in the Meth Capitol of the World, the family of Jody Jones used the obituary as a platform for drug awareness. Our hearts go out to the family.

Jody Lee Jones August 13, 1972 – November 2, 2009 Jody L. Jones passed away November 2, 2009, t 8:10 a.m., in his mother’s home, after a long illness of hepatitis C, contracted from long term intravenous methamphetamine use. Jody is survived by one daughter, Chastity M. Jones; his mother, Georgia Boutelle; three sisters, Billie Miller, Belinda Jackson, and Kerry Miller, who were caring for him until his tragic end; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Jody left us at the early age of 37 years, due to liver and organ failure from hep C and other side effects from long term meth use. It is our prayer and hope that maybe by sharing this, a message or example can be sent to others who may be considering this life choice, are maybe already have, to just please think about it and try to find help before meth takes you out too, because it is truly a tragedy for a family to watch someone they love killing themselves. For years to be fighting for a last breath or a last ounce of life when it’s just to late. In Loving Memory of our Jody (before meth). Memorial services are pending.

On the flip side in Florida, the family of Bob Garrett planned a memorial service at Disney World for the aging mouseketeer, and rode his favorite rides in his memory.

They scattered some ashes around a brick he donated, at the entrance to the Magic Kingdom, and behind a statue of Mickey on Main Street USA.

“It’s where he wanted to spend eternity,” said his wife.

Les Paul In His Own Words

When I met Michael Cochran, he and his brother were commuting to New Jersey for interviews with the great Les Paul for a book chronicling Paul’s career.   Nashville photographer Wolf Hoffmann joined them on several trips to photograph the hundreds of guitars in Les’s personal collection.

After many hours of recorded interviews and conversations with Les Paul, Mike created all the text in the book, weaving together Paul’s recollections and expressions with his own insights to create:  “Les Paul, In His Own Words.”

A lifelong Les Paul fan wrote, “I’ve always wanted to meet Les, and after reading this book, I feel like I have.”

I agree. Michael introduced me to some of the guitar greats, like Tommy Emmanuel, Chet Atkins, and now Les Paul. The experiments and innovation Paul made not only electrifying the guitar, his breakthroughs with multi-track recording and his late wife’s frustration with competing with Paul’s other love made for a fascinating read.

$40 well spent,  this beautiful book makes a great gift idea for the guitar lover.

Barbara Warren, one of the world’s elite endurance athletes in her age group has died after breaking her neck in a bike crash at the Santa Barbara Triathlon. She was 65.

Warren crashed her bike on a downhill road about halfway through the 34-mile cycling section of the race on Saturday.

Warren was paralyzed from the neck down and was breathing with the aid of the ventilator.

Drake said her sister told the family by blinking and nodding that she wanted to die.

“I talked to her and she nodded over and over and over again. She wanted to leave,” Drake said. “No athlete would like to have a life with only their eyes talking.”

Warren won her age group in the 2003 Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii. She competed in the race, the world’s top triathlon, 13 times and finished in the top five in her age group eight times.

Remarkable!

Rev. Robert Shields (1918 – 2007) was a former Minister and high school English teacher who lived in Dayton, Washington. He left a diary of 37.5 million words chronicling every 5 minutes of his life from 1972 until a stroke disabled him in 1997.

Excerpts:

July 25, 1993
7 am: I cleaned out the tub and scraped my feet with my fingernails to remove layers of dead skin.
7.05 am: Passed a large, firm stool, and a pint of urine. Used five sheets of paper.

August 13, 1995
8.45 am: I shaved twice with the Gillette Sensor blade [and] shaved my neck behind both ears, and crossways of my cheeks, too.
